If you are a surfer, Iguana Beach is the best place to be in all of Nicaragua. There are 2 world-class surf spots located on this one mile stretch of beach. These breaks are two of the best in Nicaragua and offer completely different surfing experiences.

Playa Colorado (named after the river that forms the bank called Rio Colorado) is one of the best beach breaks in Nicaragua.

Colorado requires a short paddle out, and offers both rights and lefts with plenty of big, open barrels. This spot breaks best on an incoming tide and can handle swell anywhere from knee high to double-overhead and bigger. There are several peaks and plenty of waves to be had.

Panga Drops is an offshore, horse-shoe shaped rock reef that amplifies any swell. It is a shifty wave that offers big take offs, long rippable walls and big barrels on the inside section.

Panga Drops breaks best on a lower tide and can handle any swell that hits Nicaragua. The break requires a long paddle out and is not for the weak paddler. A bigger board is suggested to get into the sets out there. Both long boarders and short boarders will love this wave.

Most surfers who come to Nicaragua and stay at places other than Iguana beach, end up spending most of their time traveling to Iguana by boat to surf these two spots. Why waste all your time and money going back and forth on a boat when you can stay right there on the beach and watch the waves from the pool?

Since Iguana is private, to surf there you have to either stay in one of the condos/houses on the beach, or take a boat from another location. The boat rides take anywhere from 10-90 minutes depending on where you are staying. So the early morning sessions are very uncrowded, as well as the late evening session just before sunset, as most boats have to leave before sunset.

If you are traveling with your family or with a significant other who doesn't surf, Iguana is by far the best place to be. Your kids and/or significant other can lay by the pool, sit on the beach, play golf and tennis, or take pictures of you surfing. So you don't have to feel bad surfing for hours while your family is sitting on a boat or waiting for you to return.
